There are a variety of undead creatures in Avernum. Shamans are slightly stronger than those two types of Goblins and are also able to cast basic spells. Goblins typically are one of the following: The Nephilim generally use Goblins as slaves, however, both groups are hostile towards you and humans generally. Nepharim (just like their weaker counterparts) use Goblins as slaves, generally for building and fighting.

Unexperienced adventurers should stay away from the places they reside in until they've leveled up a bit and/or gained more powerful spells (preferable Ice Rain).
